IDEC Pharmaceuticals joined with Biogen to become Biogen Idec. (NASDAQ:BIIB) The company focuses on developing treatments for cancer and autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The company's list of drugs include AVONEX, for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis; RITUXAN, a monoclonal antibody used to treat B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) developed with Genentech; AMEVIVE; and ZEVALIN, a radioimmunotherapy treatment for relapsed or low-grade B-cell NHL. Biogen Idec's research is focused on oncology, neurobiology, and autoimmune disease treatments, though it is considering expanding into new areas.

Shares were up 7% as profits beat estimates.
