Advocates have been working fiercely on behalf of HIV+ women in prison for decades. One would hope that with this tireless work the prison system would have a more comprehensive strategy for HIV+ prisoners; however, this is not the case. HIV+ women inside still face daily human rights abuses, through confinement and inept medical care. The story of a young HIV+ woman in prison exemplifies the prison system's continued failure to provide appropriate care for women.

In July 2005, Lara Jenkins arrived at the Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) with an aggressive AIDS diagnosis at the young age of twenty-three. Lara had been receiving comprehensive care at a HIV/AIDS clinic in her local area, and her health had been improving. In order to insure her continued progress, she needed a health care regimen very closely followed by a competent HIV/AIDS specialist.
