No collegiate sports rivalry can top the one between the Bruins and the Trojans when it comes to proximity-the schools are 13 miles apart--intensity, and breadth of competition. (UCLA has 99 NCAA team championships, which is the most in the country, while USC is third with 84.) Here are some of the memorable moments from nearly eight decades of Trojan-Bruin matchups:
FOOTBALL, 1939
The teams entered the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum--then the home stadium for both-undefeated, with a conference title and an invitation to the Rose Bowl at stake. Before a crowd of more than 100,000, they battled to a scoreless draw going into the fourth quarter. In the final minutes UCLA rolled to the two, led by Jackie Robinson and Kenny Washington.
