I have only once been targeted with a gun, but once was enough. I was standing beside a river in a remote mountain valley, in sight of a ramshackle campsite that featured a mildewed auto-tent, battered yank-tank and a haunch of something-or-other hung in a tree. A scrawny youth swaggered from the tent holding a rifle. Smirking, he raised the thing to his shoulder and took careful aim at my head. The implicit message was clear: 'Fuck Off'. This trainee redneck was enforcing his prior claim to all he surveyed. The explicit message was that he had power over me--the power of life or death--because he had a gun and I did not.
