Governor's minimum wage hike to hit eateries harder than hotel owners; restaurateurs dealing with spikes in fuel, food, rents.

Businesses never like to see an increase in the minimum wage. But the recent hike, which Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law this month, is less likely to have a negative impact on the county's booming hotel industry than on its restaurants.

"I think hotels will try to pass the cost on to consumers and that might work in 2007," said Bob Rauch, a professor at San Diego State University's tourism and hospitality program and co-owner of the Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego-Del Mar. He was referring to a 75-cent increase that takes the rate to $7.50 starting Jan. 1. "That's an additional 12 percent, yet hotel revenue will go up no more than 6 percent this year and probably won't exceed that next year."
