Back when apron strings were longer and kids didn't orbit their parents so tightly, almost from the moment I could walk I was free to roam our neighbourhood. Our dead-end street had been freshly gouged into the virgin slopes of Strathmore North, ending at a creek that marked suburban Melbourne's north-west frontier. Beyond were perished paddocks of spiky yellow gorse, a purple haze of Scotch thistle, hollow prickle-bushes and bomb cars--the haunt of cats, rats, rabbits and foxes, snakes, blue-tongue lizards and the tetanus bacterium. Redback spiders were so plump and plentiful they were collected from our neighbourhood by the CSIRO for anti-venom research.
Yet this forbidding environment also included us kids. We were drawn beyond the end of the road by the imperative to explore. Independence and initiative developed in us as we ranged...
