Anyone walking through the northeast-side office of Born Aviation Products Inc., can easily deduce how company founder Don Born got into the business of wholesaling aviation-themed gifts.

Visitors are greeted by airplane seats. Books about aviation and aircraft fill two shelves. Polished aircraft engine parts serve as table decorations. And pictures of airplanes--some with groups of people posed in front of them--fill the walls.

Most of the aircraft parts came from planes similar to the Lockheed Super Continental that Don Born flew in Vietnam. Upon his return, he began working for his father-in-law's business, DeMoss Tool and Die on Virginia Avenue. He kept alive his interest in aviation by starting Born Aviation as a hobby, selling gift items to aviation museums and air-show vendors from his family's home.

It quickly turned into a family business. Don's wife, Judy, surmises she did most of the work in the early years while Don was running the tool-and-die shop. Their son, David, 36, recalls helping fill orders from the inventory...
