Each year, Cincinnati Opera includes what it dubs a "stretch" piece alongside more conventional fare on its summer-season lineup, and this year it was Chabrier's L'etoile (June 22). It's a stretch to call this fizzy piece an opera, and with a fantastically silly story but masterfully witty score, there's nothing quite like it in operetta, either. But there's no question it is in the genre of crowd-pleasers, especially in this surreal and circus-like co-production from Glimmerglass Opera and New York City Opera. Fanciful and delightfully absurdist, the piece was brought to Cincinnati's Music Hall stage with stylistic panache by conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni and director Alain Gauthier.
