For US$1.5 bn, Inmarsat has purchased three next-generation satellites--known as the I-4 series--which are capable of delivering the BGAN service (IP-compatible synchronous data speeds of up to 432Kbps to mobile terminals) as well as legacy Inmarsat services. The investment also buys the ground segment; a 3G-compatible terrestrial core network (supplied by Ericsson); and what Inmarsat calls a 'state-of-the-art' billing system.
