JUNCTION CITY - For more than a half-century, town met country along Prairie Road here.

A single row of houses along the road's west side stood sentry over nearly a quarter-section of farm land. Though outside the city limits, the neighborhood served as the community's western outpost.

That's changing this fall.

The longtime grass seed field has been annexed into the city. The longtime "back road" to Eugene has been torn up as crews built sanitary and storm sewer beneath it.

Backhoes and bulldozers have begun transforming the open field into three subdivisions. Together, they will hold 224 new homes - boosting Junction City's housing inventory more than 10 percent.

That will be a dramatic change of scene for Prairie Road residents such as Carl and Enola Nielsen.
