The Mutaytor is 100 tribal drums, live-mixed electronica, fire performers, hoop dancers, aerial artists and a full band complete with horn section.

There are also Chinese parade lions, giant screen visuals and a squad of interactive dancers and performers.

The WOW Hall is the place and Thursday is the day for some serious overstimulation.

The group has never entertained Eugene before. It traces its roots to the 1996 Burning Man festival, where founder "Matty the Mutaytor" laid out every instrument he had on a stage of bubble wrap for anyone to play.

"It was a nonstop drum jam that expanded in '97 when he brought out a full drum kit and played two-hour solo drum concerts," a news release says. Within 30 minutes, the crowd of 500 turned into 1,000, with an endless array of performers spontaneously joining in, the release says.

It's all grown from there. Now, the still-unsigned act has sold out venues such as the Fillmore in San Francisco.

The group's motto is: "Mutayshun ... because evolution takes too long." So much do they believe this mantra that they say the only way to compete with the act would be for part of it to break off and do its own thing.
