In 1930 in Linas Hatzedek shul in Philadelphia the president was a man named Mr. S. In the old country Mr. S. was a member of the exalted profession of chimney sweep. Upon his arrival in American from Galicia in Poland, he had to give up his original calling to become a plumber. Then he became a roofer because he always aspired to higher things. Then, when there was a property boom after World War I, he began dealing in real estate, which was his calling when I first met him. I perceived that the was a crude, ignorant individual, openly violating the Sabbath, a man who struck his wife several times a day while carrying on affairs with other women. Yet he craved "respect"--koved--and in time promoted himself to be president of the synagogue in which all the officers wee known to be thieves

When I first met him, he was a good dresser, smoking big Havana cigars, and had his nails manicured every day, not for hygienic reasons but because he was carrying on an affair with the manicurist. The thick silver chain draped across his paunch carried a huge silver watch. Big diamond rings...
