A 400-acre horse farm is rare in the suburbs, and chances of preserving one through the decades even rarer.

The offspring of the late Jane and William McGinley think they have found a way to save at least the appearance of Horizon Farms.

One of the last large farms in Barrington Hills will be auctioned by Sheldon Good & Co. through sealed bids Oct. 25.

Robert McGinley, a film producer and president of Horizon Farms, owns horses both here at his late parents' farm, and in California.

Part of the magic and rarity of Horizon Farms is its "rideability," he said.

This means its 400 acres offer a variety of terrain but not steep, difficult hills like those found in the Galena area.

His real dream is that the farm could be used for equestrian sports for the Olympics.

"We wanted to do a whole farm auction with the idea that we attract a buyer who wants to operate a farm and keep the farm and equestrian sport elements of it going," he said.
