The tunnel, constructed in the mid-1930's, crosses beneath mining concessions in the Morococha mining district and was intended to drain mine workings. The water collected by the tunnel is highly acidic and contains quantities of certain elements which could exceed permissible limits. The tunnel discharges water into the Yauli River at a rate of 1,200 litters per second. The water then flows into the Mantaro River, which serves as a source of irrigation for agriculture.
