PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Japan-based ELPIDA MEMORY INC. is currently considering investing $8,555,000,000 in order to build a new dynamic random access memory (DRAM) plant. However, the company has not yet decided if it should build the new facility in Taiwan in conjunction with POWERCHIP SEMICONDUCTOR CORP. or in China in association with SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING INTERNATINATIONAL CORP. (SMIC) or in Singapore.

As a result the Japanese company recently met with Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs to discuss tax incentives and subsidies if ELPIDA were to build its plant in the country. In addition ELPIDA officials also met with China and Singapore authorities about potential tax breaks and subsidies.

In any case, ELPIDA reportedly hopes to start operations at the new plant...
