Lars von Trier's Dogville (2003) is, despite its winking aspirations to minimalism, one of the most expansive films of recent years. Its designedly grueling, ruefully funny account of a wayward mob princess (Nicole Kidman) who suffers prettily at the hands of venal small-town monsters before having them obliterated in a climactic fit of avenging-angel fury has been interpreted as: an Anti-American salvo and a religious parable; a formal provocation and a genre parody; a misogynist screed and a satire of same; a pitch-blackened slice of Thornton Wilder and a rudely immodest proposal ("kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out") worthy of Jonathan Swift.

The Mexico-based critic Jake Horsley has his own idea: in his new book Dogville vs. Hollywood, he interprets von Trier's film as an allegory for the grim process by which would-be maverick artists are entrapped and absorbed...
