I stumbled onto Southwest Airlines' seat-assigning experiment the other evening on a flight to Oakland.

As you've read elsewhere, the Dallas-based carrier wants to test if assigned seating will speed up the boarding process, and has chosen San Diego as its laboratory.

Arriving at my gate, the agent traded in my office-generated boarding pass for a new pass, one with the peel-off stickers in hot pink indicating a seat number--8C (happily, an aisle seat).

She then directed me to the dreaded C line, which didn't matter this time around. I had what l wanted, an aisle seat close to the front of the cabin so I could make a quick getaway after landing.

Stub in hand, I sauntered down the Jetway and plopped into my seat. We were soon climbing into the wild blue yonder.
