Edison rates to fall by $52.5M this year, $26.2M in '07

Detroit Edison Co.'s rates will drop by $52.5 million beginning this week and will fall an additional $26.2 million in 2007 under a rate settlement approved Thursday by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

The reduction applies to Edison residential, commercial and industrial customers, and stems from a March PSC order in which state regulators cited an improving economic condition at the utility and asked Edison to explain why its rates should not be reduced.

The settlement also benefits customers who buy their electricity from a supplier other than Edison.

Terry Harvill, vice president of regulatory and government affairs for Constellation NewEnergy, an alternate electricity supplier, said rates for electric-choice customers will drop by amounts that range from 7 percent for small commercial customers to 12.5 percent for industrial customers because a distribution charge paid by choice customers is reduced.
