Solicitor Joan Kimm sets out to explore why Aboriginal women in Australia experience such high levels of violence in their communities. Case by case she builds her argument. The tragedy and trauma are undeniable. Kimm looks to the impact of colonisation on Indigenous Australians, the anthropological and historical sources on gender relations and customary law, and judicial attitudes as she lays bare the patriarchal conceptions and misconceptions that have rendered women vulnerable.
