Now accepted as having an ultimate origin in South America, sweet potato holds an important place within Oceania as a trans-Pacific introduction. As this new edited volume aptly outlines, sweet potato was introduced during the prehistoric era into Polynesia through the dispersal of human agents. As Yen notes in the concluding chapter, the consideration of the plant's role within Oceania also relates to major anthropological issues of broad import.
