Peter Isard diligently and skillfully tackles the two major economic concerns of globalization--financial crises and growth failures--in a thorough but highly readable book that will appeal to both scholars and a broader audience. Isard provides a thoughtful account of what causes international financial crises and their frequency and severity, what fosters sudden stops in capital flows, what influences crisis contagion, and how these each affect development and poverty (negatively). He also provides an objective and balanced discussion of International Monetary Fund (IMF) organization and activities and the factors that limit its effectiveness in preventing the two main economic problems of globalization.
