Onetouch, a subsidiary of Ghana Telecom, the national telecoms carrier, is confident that the number of people accessing its services will double this year. It has achieved a 300% growth rate over the past year, the highest since the network started operation, raising its subscriber base to over 700,000 from 160,000 last year, and giving it close to 25% share of the Ghanaian market.

"Our market share is increasing quite rapidly and for us it is the trend more than the actual subscriber acquisition," says Philip Sowah, chief officer of Onetouch.

The network operates one of the most stringent methods of counting subscribers. Any client who does not call out of the network for 45 days is not counted. This is evident in the relatively short validity periods offered on its prepaid top-up cards.
