Since his death in 1997 Martin Kippenberger has had more museum exhibitions and recognition within the mainstream art world--something he longed for during his career--than he did while he was alive. A prolific artist, Kippenberger's posthumous popularity is likely due to three things: the quality and volume of work that survives him, his ardent self-promotion that was an integral part of his art practice, and his enfant terrible reputation which, to some, made him an undesirable artist to work with while alive.

Kippenberger's retrospective at London's Tate Modern--his first in a major U.K. museum--culminates with The Happy End of Franz Kafka's "Amerika" (1994). Taking its inspiration from Czech author Franz Kafka's 1927 novel Amerika, the installation is filled with mismatched desks and chairs; it is a mega-office on a green astroturf carpet framed by bleachers.
