Introduction

Attitudes towards the environment are changing--damage to the environment is no longer seen as an inevitable by-product of wealth creation and the emphasis is increasingly on the development of sustainable business practices.

In the context of increasing global concern about environmental issues and a growing body of environmental legislation, the onus is on senior managers and directors to demonstrate that they are taking environmental responsibilities and liabilities seriously.

The development of an organisational action plan for the environment can:

* provide a coherent statement of policy and a practical system for implementation

* help to improve communication and management systems by providing information on the environmental impact or "footprint" of the business

* lead to the more efficient and cost-effective use of resources

* reduce waste

* contribute to cost savings and improved productivity

* lay a foundation for the effective management of environmental risk

* enhance corporate image by demonstrating to customers, shareholders and the general public that action to reduce damage to the environment is a priority.
