The last two times Oregon went searching for a graduate assistant football coach, a healthy dose of risk was involved.

A year ago, it was the Ducks taking a gamble. This past offseason, it was the applicant.

Handling many of the scouting and practice preparation duties for the Ducks this season are Luke Butkus and Eddy Morrissey, the former a 26-year-old in his first coaching job and the latter a 35-year-old with nearly a decade of experience as a major college coach.

Butkus, a former all-conference center at Illinois and the nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus, was hired before the 2005 season despite concerns about his lack of a coaching resume. Morrissey, on the other hand, coached at the NCAA Division I-AA level for nine seasons before giving it all up to go back to school and work at Oregon.
