Is this the season Southern California is dethroned after a dominant run in the Pac-10 Conference the past three years?

California is the clear favorite to challenge the Trojans for the title, but at least two other teams - Oregon and Arizona State - are considered contenders at this point.

One reporter's ranking as the season begins:

1. Southern California

The Trojans (12-1 overall, 8-0 Pac-10 in 2005) have huge holes to fill at quarterback and running back after the departures of Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and LenDale White for the NFL. John David Booty finally gets his chance at QB, and a chance to show he deserved the hype when he graduated high school a year early to enroll at USC.

Running back C.J. Gable could become the first freshman to start a season opener for Pete Carroll. Lucky for USC, Dwayne Jarrett is back at receiver, and the defense is led by an NFL-caliber group of linebackers.
