Nelson Sandgren died earlier this month at his home in Corvallis. He was 88.

Though his was hardly a household name outside art-world households, Sandgren was the last of a generation of Oregon painters who embraced painting for the sheer pleasure of painting. His watercolors, in which you can clearly trace the lineage of postimpressionist Paul Cezanne, were seemingly effortless celebrations of the Oregon landscape.
