Gottschalks department store officials aren't sure exactly who the typical shopper may be when their newest store opens today at Eugene's Valley River Center, so they've loaded up with $6.5 million in merchandise that runs the "moderate to better" inventory gamut.

"What we've found out is (the typical Eugene shopper) is a diverse customer - which is typical in a number of our locations," said Mike Schmidt, Gottschalks senior vice president and director of stores.
