The down side of globalization hit Eugene with a thud Wednesday as Whittier Wood Products announced that it would move most of its furniture making to Vietnam and lay off 100 of its Eugene employees.

CEO Scott Whittier said the company had no choice. The glut of inexpensive, Asian-made furniture on the U.S. market caused a three-year slide in the company's sales, including a drop from $50 million in sales in 2005 to about $28 million in 2006.

To survive, the 30-year-old homegrown firm needed an Asian strategy of its own. So six weeks ago, it bought a 150,000-square-foot plant near Ho Chi Minh City - formerly Saigon - in Vietnam.
