The road to state will be a lot more crowded this year. And in some cases, more easily navigated.

Under the new competitive landscape for prep athletics mandated by the Oregon School Activities Association - in which member schools are divided into six classifications instead of four - there will be an additional 28 state championship trophies handed out in 19 different sports.

Naturally, the total number of teams qualifying for the playoffs will also rise.

In order to accommodate each sport, the OSAA's state championship committee met on a regular basis last season to discuss how to set up each existing state tournament, and in some instances, how to create new ones.

`It was a daunting task,' OSAA executive director Tom Welter said. `It wasn't just a matter of tweaking current formats. The committee had to do a cost analysis on every event we sponsored. We had to make sure we generated enough revenue to offset the expenses of our expanded playoff formats.'

The new look for boys basketball provides a glimpse into that process.

During the 2005-06 season, a total of 100 teams earned playoff spots, with four state titles determined at tournaments in Eugene, Corvallis, Pendleton and Baker. This year, the number of playoff berths has grown to 124 and the number of state titles...
