MIDWESTERN LEAGUE

Thurston football coach Justin Starck noticed the change before the first practice of the season.

"We had our Midwestern League coaches meeting and I sat down, and before I thought about it I wondered, `Where's Marty and Chris? They must be running late,' ' Starck said. "Then it was `Wow, they're not here anymore.' '

Sheldon's Marty Johnson and South Eugene's Chris Miller now attend Southwest Conference football coaches meetings, and Lebanon is in the 5A Mid-Willamette Conference, as the Midwestern League has been sliced to two-thirds of its former size with just six teams.

Thurston's DeWayne Cantrell, who has coached cross country at the school for three decades, figures he will notice the difference at the Midwestern district cross country meet when 42 runners line up at the start instead of 63.

"That will definitely be different," Cantrell said.
