After more than a year of debate and appeals, the new look of high school sports in Oregon will debut this week.
The Oregon School Activities Association's six-classification system is now a reality, meaning that South Eugene and Sheldon are preparing for the inaugural season of the new Southwest Conference and the Midwestern League continues with only six schools.
South Eugene and Sheldon opposed the move that took them away from their longtime rivals, and the Eugene School District fought hard to avoid the changes.
Now, however, South Eugene and Sheldon are focusing on the positives as they settle in for a new season.
"As far as the new league, we're looking forward to the competition," said Dave Hancock, South's athletic director and boys basketball coach. "We're going to do all we can to ease the burden on our families and kids in terms of transportation and missed school time."
Sheldon is also preparing to test itself in a league that, in addition to South Eugene, includes Grants Pass, Roseburg, North Medford and South Medford.
"We're excited for the challenge," new Sheldon athletic director Mark Risen said. "In the end, I think it will be a great opportunity for us as far as going out and proving we're still the best athletic program in the state at whatever level they put us at. That's the challenge."
