Hynix Semiconductor announced Tuesday that it's planning a $250 million upgrade next year at its computer-chip plant in west Eugene.

It would be the single largest investment since the company - then named Hyundai - spent $1.4 billion to build and equip the facility in 1997. As part of next year's upgrade, Hynix plans to add 100 workers to its 1,150-employee work force, said Bobby Lee, Hynix spokesman in Eugene.

Hynix will update its equipment to continue producing dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, for computers and servers, or possibly switch to producing another kind of memory - NAND Flash, which is used in digital audio players, such as iPods, Lee said.
