With gas hovering around $3.10 a gallon, few of today's teens can afford to cruise to school as they'd like.

They may not have seen "American Graffiti," but they've embraced its legacy of rolling independence.

Faced with the more humbling option - riding the school bus for the 12th straight year - many teens are heading back to class in car pools.
