On a recent Monday after the weekend's bumper crop of tourists had thinned out, there was actually public parking available off the Pacific Coast Highway in Del Mar--a relief, no doubt, to the parents bringing their kids to the Willis Bros. School of Surfing, which sets up shop, or tent rather, on the city's beach.

"It took three years to get call forwarding here," said Mike Willis, referring to the cellular phone service that enables him and his identical twin brother, Milt, to answer business calls to their Solona Beach home-based office while conducting classes and clinics at various beaches throughout the county.

The brothers, age 50, who earned a worldwide reputation for surfing the "Biggest Wednesday" break, a milestone event in surfing history off the North Shore of Oahu in 1998, have a habit of finishing each other's thoughts.

"It was the Pandora's Box of surfing," Mike said.

"It's a freak thing, but it makes the sport more popular," Milt said, referring to what has now become an annual...
