Hayward Field has been the site of numerous battles in the distance races over the years, but none quite like the spectacle produced by a pair of precocious 12-year-olds in the final of the 3,000 meters Friday.

The starring roles were played by Roblet Muhudin of the Blazers Track Club in Denver and Musa Ahmed of Pride Sports Academy in Portland.

Both runners were determined to win a national title, and perhaps set a Midget Boys (11-12) record, at the biggest meet of their young careers - the USA National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.

Ahmed, a native of Ethiopia, was the top seed in the event, owning a PR of 9 minutes, 45.06 seconds, more than 17 seconds faster than the previous best turned in by Muhudin (10:02.61), who...
