DRAIN - Georgia "Pete" Rychard is baking a $100 pie.

No, her flaky, hand-pinched pastry isn't stuffed with greenbacks - just 6 cups of sliced, golden delicious apples.

But tradition says it will fetch at least a C-note when it's auctioned off Saturday at the North Douglas County Fair in Drain. At past fairs, her pies have gone for as much as $170.

Pie contests are a staple at many fairs across the country this time of year, but folks in Drain and Yoncalla take the challenge particularly seriously: Their annual pie auction is the financial pillar of the 82-year-old fair.
