Many scientists agree that embryonic stem cell research has the potential to reduce human suffering on a blockbuster scale, similar to the impact antibiotics and anesthesia have had on medicine. The potential to arrest, even reverse, Alzheimer's disease is the most common example.

Unfortunately, the anticipated results from the research have been slow to appear. Scientists believe that rapid progress in this research depends on federal funds. President Bush will not allow federal funds to be used for scientific research on stem cells derived from human embryos (embryonic stem cell research).
