FLORENCE - OK, so it wasn't exactly a barn burner.

But to the staunch Democrats huddled at Betty Uchytil's home on Thursday night, the important thing was that Florence's own Jim Rassmann stood on the podium at the Democratic National Convention in Boston and proclaimed his support for John Kerry.

Even if the announcer forgot to mention where Rassmann lives.

"Who ever heard of Florence, Oregon?" cracked Eve Arno, after Rassmann, 56, strolled past the dozen veterans whose hometowns had just been clearly pronounced, one by one.
