Government officials and insurance companies think they've found a cure for what ails a healthcare system beset by inefficient care, overutilization and runaway spending. The elixir is called consumer-directed healthcare, which is based on the idea of giving patients more power over their own medical decisions.

But there's one problem with consumer-directed healthcare: Consumers don't seem to want anything to do with it.

In fact, Americans are "unprepared for consumer-directed care'' because they rely too heavily on the advice of their doctors and remain acutely sensitive to out-of-pocket costs, which can increase dramatically under many of these high-deductible plans, according to a new national research study commissioned by the federal government.
