There's a large room at Pawling Corp.'s headquarters plant that's a lot more than just a space for manufacturing pharmaceutical rubber goods. It's a symbol of the company's future.

Within a 15,000-sq.-ft. area that once was used to produce flood control doors, Pawling has opened a room to make a product the firm's managers hope will develop into another niche business winner-the Cepure line of specialty closure liners and septa.

"We define it as a pharmaceutical manufacturing white room,'' said Craig C. Busby, president of the Engineered Products Division, based in Pawling. In the long run the company expects the section to achieve clean room certification.

"It's a huge departure for us,'' he said.
