The Tourism Business Improvement District proposal, which recommends charging hotel guests an extra 2 percent fee on nightly rentals, is not the solution to boosting the city's tourism marketing dollars.

To the contrary, the passage of this proposal will have negative impacts to the tourism industry and our local economy. Instead of an industry-imposed tax increase, the hoteliers of San Diego must work with the City Council to find the necessary funds without further burdening the very tourists who drive our industry and livelihood.

The current transient occupancy tax, or TOT, already adds a 10.5 percent tax to hotel rooms. The 2 percent surcharge would be placed on top of the existing TOT,...
