The first anyone at Per-Se Technologies heard that links embedded in their software had enabled an Indiana information-technology consultant to access data on thousands of patients of Georgetown University Hospital in Washington was when a reporter called late last month to question them about the issue, a company official said.
"When we were finally contacted, it was only by the reporter,'' said Robert Borchert, vice president of investor relations and corporate communication at Alpharetta, Ga.-based Per-Se. Earlier this year, in a deal that was part of the breakup of NDCHealth Corp., Per-Se acquired the low-cost MediSoft brand of practice-management system software for small physician offices that was involved in the security breach.
"We were in a tough position, because we had no other information to go on,'' Borchert said in a telephone interview. "Once some information was available to us, it was more of a challenge on how did it get there.''
