Infant Mortality rates are often used as a tool to compare the general health of populations around the world. Infant mortality is defined as the death of a baby less than one year old, and is measured by the number of such deaths per 1000 live births. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the leading causes of death in infants are congenital abnormalities, preterm or low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), problems related to complications of pregnancy, and respiratory distress syndrome.
