The thoughtful contributions from Toby Wall (2006), Gillian Symon (2006) and Gerard Hodgkinson (2006) are to be warmly welcomed. While each offers a perspective somewhat different from my own, it seems clear that all acknowledge we have a problem, and share a concern for improving communication between academics and practitioners within our discipline. Each contributor delivers cogent arguments that can speak for themselves, and my response will therefore be brief.

Possibly the main point of divergence, raised by Toby Wall, and more forcefully by Gerard Hodgkinson, concerns my argument that there is an overemphasis on methodological content within the pages of JOOP. In my original paper (Gelade, 2006), I suggest methodological articles could be diverted to other journals, and I also believe that some of the methodological detail in other papers is turgid and unnecessary.
