The present issue marks the transition to a new editorial team, represented on Atlantic and Pacific coasts, not to mention places in between. We are collectively flattered and delighted to sustain and is develop the traditions of The Canadian Geographer (TCG) that began fifty-five years ago and is still going strong. Indeed, we pay homage to past editors and authors.

Since its foundations, TCG has fully represented the diversity and eclecticism that so characterizes geography as a discipline. The present issue, for example, invites you to contemplate: how (and why) to map the world; the imperatives of mapping the Arctic; the contemporary dynamics of local work forces; the connections between climatic hazards and insurance and the local environmental and health costs of industrialization. After whizzing you around the world and across (and up and down) Canada, we then take you to the Assiniboine Zoo in Winnipeg! The book reviews in this issue further underline the breadth and depth of geography.

The primary goal of your new editorial team is to ensure the vitality and quality of TCG as a premier outlet for your research in all its manifestations, English and French, human and physical, cartographic and philosophical. We expect that TCG will be biased towards contributions by Canadian geographers and on Canadian geography, but not exclusively so. After all, Canadian geographers have diverse global interests, and particular Canadian geographies are globally significant and connected to global processes.
