Industrial, retail expansions booming in Meridian.

MERIDIAN -- The commercial real estate picture is bright in Meridian. The East Mississippi city doesn't have much vacant space and downtown is being revitalized.

The centerpiece of downtown is the MSU Riley Center set to open September 8 with fanfare and a starfilled concert season. The $25-million project is in the finishing stages and includes the renovated Grand Opera House and adjoining Marks Rothenberg and Newbery buildings.

The center is the impetus for a 451-car parking garage that opened recently and is described by the city's assistant for government affairs, Maureen Lofton, as a beautiful building. "More money was spent than would ordinarily be spent on a parking garage to give it the historic look that fits in downtown," Lofton said. "It looks like a late 19th century building with brick and shutters."
