The seventeen articles in this volume offer examples, from a variety of disciplinary and career perspectives, of how globalization is transforming the countryside. Epp and Whitson introduce the volume by highlighting two recurring themes: the increasingly sharp divide between rural and urban labour in the global economy and the 'new relationships' between regional governments and rural communities as governments shift from policies designed to protect and support the rural economy to those which favour large-scale investment.
