SHEILA THOMAS

Family: She has family in Roseburg, California and Montana and lives in the River Road neighborhood with her domestic partner of 13 years, artist Kenneth Tripp, and two Rottweilers. She has no children, which has made it easier for her to immerse herself in her work, she says.

Interests: Gardening, sewing, listening to music, playing the flute

On the bustling summertime campus of Cesar Chavez Elementary School, Sheila Thomas is the one to call when things get tough.

And things get tough a lot. The Extended School Year program for children with disabilities serves 160 of the most physically and emotionally fragile students in the district. Medical issues crop up daily, meltdowns by the hour at best.
