Instead of paying "as much as $200 a pair," I made my own take-apart hiking stick that fits in my pack, from two second-hand ski poles and a bit of craft work.

It reaches nearly to shoulder height, with handles at two levels, good when going downhill. When on uneven or hilly ground, I look for a second one of wood, which helps me go faster with less effort and spreads the load.
